Whitby Charter Boat Update & Prospects: Winter/Spring 2016
Firstly we would like to thank all our anglers for their support throughout 2015, which was a cracking year for Whitby boat fishing with good stocks of cod, ling and pollock keeping rods bending all year.
As we write this (early February), strong winds have played havoc with the fishing. There are lots of cod out there, we just can’t get out at them!
Mistress, Shy Torque, Sea Otter 2, Sea Urchin and Trot On have all been getting out during the very brief windows in the weather and have reported good catches.
At this time of year its mainly uptiding trips out of Whitby, but given a rare settled spell some of the skippers will have a run further afield.
Rich Ward on Shy Torque reported a couple of uptiding trips when there was a been an odd window in the weather. The fishing was very good indeed too with his brother in law landing around 35 cod on one of his trips!! He also managed a run out to a few wrecks in early February that produced cod and pollock – nothing massive, but plenty of them!
Rich has this years tides available and registered on his website calendar and dates in the 3 competitions are moving quite quickly now, so early booking is recommended.
Visit the Shy Torque website at www.shy-torque2000.com
Paul Kilpatrick on Sea Otter 2 has been capitalising on windows in the weather by getting out on uptiding grounds a short steam out of Whitby Harbour.
Even though some of these trips have been reduced to half days, Paul has managed to steer his anglers in the direction of plenty of codlings with a few of them in the 7-8lb bracket.
Sea Otter 2 will be sailing on any days when weather allows it and skipper Paul welcomes your enquiries on 07748705695.
Again, this popular boat will be already taking bookings for the WCSA Spring, Summer and Autumn Festivals so make sure you book your place well in advance.
Sea Urchin 3 is in the water and up and running. Skipper Pete Rose has had a few outings and done pretty well on the inshore codling.
Anglers are very excited about this Pro Charter 4, which offers exceptional engine power and an amazing amount of deckspace.
On the trips out Pete has had this year they have reported good amounts of codling on the inshore grounds to uptiding methods. Its just a shame that strong winds have made these trips so infrequent.
Pete is taking bookings for Spring, Summer and Autumn on Sea Urchin 3 and you can check his availability at http://sea-urchin-whitby.co.uk/availability
Rich Cope on Mistress is another skipper who has made it out a few times when the weather has allowed. Again its uptiding that has paid dividends and Rich has been putting in full and half days when weather has allowed it.
The anglers on board Mistress caught good bags of cod alongside the usual whiting, pouting and a few ling thrown in for good measure.
Rich says that his increasing amount of regular anglers mean that given NYGoodHealth good weather, he can usually get enough people together for a trip so he welcomes last minute as well as advance bookings.
Mistress availability can be viewed on their website at www.mistress-whitby.co.uk and details of the boats uptiding trips can be found at www.mistress-whitby.co.uk/whitby-uptiding-trips/.
Rich, like other boats has had quite a few calls about spaces in the 2016 WCSA Angling Festivals, so again, it is worth booking up early for these events. You can all Rich on 07977 436903
Paul ‘Dolly’ Eddon’s Trot On, has had a couple of inshore trips when weather has allowed and fared well with codlings in the 2-6lb bracket.
Paul is looking forward to 2016 after an excellent year in 2015 which saw some magnificent fish weighed in by his anglers and in turn taking away top prizes in the WCSA Angling Festivals.
Again, you will find that spaces during festivals fill up fast so check Trot On’s availability at http://trotonwhitby.co.uk/availability and give Paul a call.
Other news from the Trot On camp is that new Whitby charter boat Alliance will be running as a sister vessel to Trot On.
Many of you will be familiar with this boat as it was ran by Mick Leonard and Pete Rose as Sea Urchin II. Now, seasoned Whitby skipper Shaun Elwick will be at the helm and those of you that know Shaun from his time on boats such as Trot On and Saxon Lady will know that a lifetimes worth of charter boat experience will be going into every trip.
Shaun and Alliance will be taking part in all the WCSA 2016 Angling Festivals, and Alliance and Trot On operating together means they can cater for larger group bookings and angling club outings.
